OSX Lion – Share Your Files Easier than Before

After few month apple release their new Mac OSX 10.7, codename Lion, they brings new features to communicate it device with other devices running on the same OSX Lion. It more easier than before, just drag and drop your files to the receiver and it all work automatically.

How it work?

I think I’ll said, “It’s all just work automatically”. All you need is turn on your wi-Fi and system will be searching for nearby Mac Devices around you. According to Apple‘s tech specs for Lion, it’ll work on the MacBook Pro (late 2008 or newer), the MacBook Air (late 2010 or newer), the MacBook (late 2008 or newer), the iMac (early 2009 or newer), Mac mini (mid-2010 or newer), and the Mac Pro (early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card or mid-2010).

How to use?

OSX Lion Airdrop Features

Open a Finder window on a Mac running Lion and select the AirDrop entry in the sidebar. (Alternatively you can choose AirDrop from the Finder’s Go menu or press Shift-Command-R.) Any Macs within about 30 feet that have Wi-Fi turned on will appear in the AirDrop window. More specifically, you’ll see either the user’s account icon or, if that person is one of your Address Book contacts, the image you’ve associated with them. Note that these Macs don’t have to be on the same Wi-Fi network; if they aren’t, AirDrop can connect them peer-to-peer.

Review

I love using this feature to send my files to the other Mac users around me.

This is simple to use, uses less devices, a.k.a: flash disk, to transfer files to another Mac.

No need to configure, you just only turn on your wi-Fi.

Because it uses wi-Fi, the transfer rate is lower than uses flash disk or LAN cable.

UDK Engine, the Way to Build an 3D Games

There are many softwares used to create games for Desktop PC / Mobile Devices like GameMaker Engine, Blaast (mobile), RPGMaker, Flash Director, etc. They have special features for their engine to let people make a game on their own. For now, I want to review an Engine used to build 3d Games for Desktop or iOS device called by Unreal Development Kit (UDK). UDK developed by Epic Games Team who create so much amazing games, such as Gear of War, Infinity Blade, and BulletStorm.

What is UDK?

All the tools you need to create great games, advanced visualizations and detailed 3D simulations on the PC and iOS. The best tools in the industry are in your hands. Steve Jobs, the “Maestro” in Memories

Almost all people in the world know Steve Jobs is, Apple Co-Founder, a creative and innovative person, and the maestro of the technology. He brings innovative technologies, like MacBook, iMac, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad became real.

Today (6/10), we lost one of the greatest maestro in the world. He passed away after lost his battle with cancer. In their official website, Apple change their homepage to recall Steve Jobs.

Apply iOS Scrolling Style on Mac OS X

Well, after try my friend Macbook with the new OS X Lion (10.7) few days ago, I’m little bit confuse about the scroll direction. Is it reverse? I think it more exactly called by iOS Style or Natural Scrolling. Apple include this style in their new OS X Lion as well as iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) system before. It change the new experience of scrolling windows more natural. Unfortunately, Mac OS X that release before Lion doesn’t have this feature.

I’ve been curious how can I implementing iOS Scrolling Style that now implemented in Lion (10.7) to my Snow Leopard (10.6.8). After search a few minutes, I’ve found a project named Scroll Reverser that developed by pilotmoon.com. Scroll Reverser is a free app for Mac OS X that reverses the direction of scrolling. You can use it with OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard to make your scrolling match the ‘natural scrolling’ in Lion.

Scroll Reverser Options

You can also use it with OS X Lion to customise scrolling behaviour beyond what is possible in system preferences, for example to reverse the trackpad but not the mouse.

To install, unzip and copy it to your Applications folder. To uninstall, drag it to the trash. Requires Mac OS X 10.5 or above. It support several language like English, Brazilian Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Spanish.

DroidDraw, GUI Builder for Android Application

Actually, Android Development Tool (ADT) plugin for Eclipse had an GUI Builder installed with it. But, I think it’s too complex when I just need some buttons or attributes, and the view of Builder isn’t comfortable for seeing. I was browsing on the internet, and finally have found alternative software, look like GUI Builder in ADT, but with a comfortable interface.

Droid Draw Interface

Droid Draw, WYSIWYG User Interface (UI) designer/editor/builder for cell phone and tablet application programming on the Android Platform. This tool was written to make the Java programming life easier. It can be used to build graphical user interfaces (GUI) for the Android cell phone platform.

This application has been release on Linux, Mac, Windows and Jar Files. You must have Java installed on your PC/Mac before to use this application. As you seen on the picture above, It have a nice interface, bigger, and user friendly. Wanna try? You can download the application here.

Apportable, Deploy iOS App on Other Platform

Well, few days ago, after I was finished rewrite my code from iOS to Android platform, I tried to search if there are other easy ways to do it without rewrite the code. Then, I found a site, apportable.com which claim that they can convert iOS application to other platform, like Android, etc. Specifically, they’re bringing cocos2d games to new audiences by making them work with all major platforms – Windows, Mac, Linux – running in a browser.

How It Works - It recompile the iOS app and link it with their cross-platform implementation of UIKit and other system libraries. The application will run on Android, Windows, Linux, and Mac, and can be distributed as a browser add-on.

Unfortunately, I haven’t tried it because the usage is still restricted to a few developers. I’ll let you to know the latest updates after my email reply. For now, let’s enjoy the video preview of Apportable.

Google +1 Button, Be Trusted.

+1 helps people discover relevant content, for examples: a website, a Google search result, or an ad, from the people they already know and trust. Adding it in to your pages lets users recommend your content, knowing that their friends and contacts will see their recommendation when it’s most relevant, in the context of Google search results.

Adding the +1 Button in to your site:

Just grab a snippet of code.
+1 button icons can render at four heights: small (15px), medium (20px), standard (24px), and tall (60px). The small, medium, and standard icons can render with or without a total count of +1′s.
It can be placed near the title of the page, above the fold, and close to sharing links to be an effective. It can also be effective to place the +1 button at both the beginning and the end of an story or article.

Facebook Send Button, More than Just a Like

Last year, facebook had campaign about their Like Button which has a capability to share an article from your blog to friends on Facebook. It places on your facebook profile as an update status, so all of your friend can read an article you share. It success and more than a thousand web pages put the Facebook Like Button on articles in their web pages to promote it. But it still had a deficiency. It couldn’t share an article to spesific peoples, it publish on your profile that all of your friends could see if they open yours.

This year, Facebook introduce a new feature that called by Send Button. Abe Parvan, an engineer of Facebook Platform, wrote on Facebook Developer Blog, he says:

The Send button is a social plugin that websites can use to let people send a link to a friend through Facebook Messages, post it to a Group, or email it to an individual. For example, if you see a Mother’s Day gift idea on 1-800-Flowers.com, you can now send a message or email to your family members to discuss. Or say you’re training for a marathon and you come across a great article about running shoes on The Huffington Post. Now you can share it with your entire running group in just one click.

The Send button drives traffic by letting users send a link and a short message to the people that would be most interested. They don’t need to leave the web page they’re on or fill out a long, annoying form. Compared to the alternatives, the Send button has fewer required steps, and it removes the need to look up email addresses by auto-suggesting friends and Groups.

How to make the MacOSX Volumes folder visible

Today, I’ll try to sync a folder on my MacBook into my external HDD using automator and rsync utility. It’s so embarassing that I dont know where is Volumes folder located after mounting my external HDD. I know that the icon of my HDD is showed up on Desktop, but it doesnt actually there. It mounted into Volumes folder and it hidden somewhere.

So, after few minutes searching, I found the way to make Volumes folder visible.

Open terminal window.
Type sudo SetFile -a -v /Volumes
Now, open Finder (Macintosh HD), and you should see the Volumes folder and all of the volume mounted on your Mac.
